Thomais (Thomi) Kotta Kyriakou (Banking and Finance Law LLM, 2017) who works as a Lead Policy Analyst at the Bank of England has recently caught up with CCLS Professor Rosa Lastra when she was delivering a presentation at the Bank on the topic of climate risk and sustainability.

Thomi commented: “I completed my LLM in Banking and Finance Law in 2017 and shortly after I qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales. I work at the Bank of England in the Prudential Policy Directorate, where we shape the UK regulatory framework for banks, insurers, and designated investment firms. Joining the UK regulator has been a great career move from private practice with opportunities for interaction with the industry, international bodies and other regulators across the globe. My experience at CCLS was fundamental for my professional career. Initially, it helped me understand which subjects I liked most, set the right career goals and use the knowledge I acquired in order to secure jobs that I was very interested in. Certainly, my  LLM was the main driver behind my decision to become a solicitor in England and Wales and challenge myself in getting outside of my comfort zone.

The LLM programme was demanding but also very rewarding. Our professors gave great emphasis on the practical aspects of law. We also had the opportunity to engage with the industry. One of my favourite memories was my first visit at the Bank of England through a project we helped Mr Professor Walker where we were collecting cryptocurrency information. The combination of learning from the very best scholars and the opportunity for students to engage with practising lawyers and discuss complex and intriguing legal problems makes the LLM experience unique. I would recommend LLM students to take every opportunity to engage with the amazing staff, participate in the mentorship programme and other events and make use of all the career support that CCLS has to offer.”
