Jorge Do Sofrimento Jay Manuel (Insurance Law LLM, 2022) says: “It was an honour to be appointed President of the Angolan Chapter of the Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (AIDA) on 19th December 2023.

The Angolan Chapter of AIDA is a non-profit association with scientific purposes, whose object is the study, development and dissemination of matters relating to Insurance Law, particularly in the field of Comparative Law and the development of international co-operation in the same field, and therefore has an inseparable link with both the market and the Academy.

AIDA - ANGOLA is aimed at professionals in the insurance sector, lawyers, judges, prosecutors, consultants, academics and anyone who may have an interest in the area of insurance law.

I firmly believe that the existence of AIDA - ANGOLA is a superb opportunity to use as a tool with a recognised scientific and technical reputation and a transnational scope, with extraordinary access to the insurance market.

The lack of specialised staff in insurance matters, particularly in the field of insurance law, both in the market and in the courts in Angola, prevents the insurance sector from fulfilling its true role of protecting people, wealth and promoting investment, which is key to the development of any sustainable economy.

There is an urgent need to introduce efficient and effective mechanisms for the effective acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills by these professionals, as well as for the production of reliable case law, so that conflicts can be resolved quickly and appropriately, with relevant and measurable impacts on reversing the current situation in the insurance market.

I’ve got 12 years of experience in the insurance sector, 8 of which was in the Legal Office of the Angolan Insurance Regulator and 4 as Chief of the Board of Shimba Insurance Broker S.A; alongside my LLM Insurance Law at QMUL, which, I would like to add, is the best university for preparing brilliant specialists in the field of insurance law. Throughout these years I have realised that the insurance sector is full of opportunities, anywhere in the world, and is progressively necessary in a world with increasingly complex and unexplored insurable risks.

In addition, the insurance sector is beginning to be vigorously called upon to play a crucial role in financing the transition to a carbon neutral economy, reallocating capital to technologies and more sustainable companies, choosing adequate business models, putting in place ESG elements in their operations to meet the Paris Agreement target.  Therefore, it is clear there is a great need for specialists. It is important to combine experience with specialised training, as well as getting involved in the industry, and I am sure AIDA – ANGOLA is a privileged way to contribute, learn and draw on prior professional and academic backgrounds from its members.
