On 28th June CCLS China Alumni Chapter has organised a webinar on a widely debated hot topic - real estate tax. The legislative purpose of the real estate tax law is mainly to improve the local tax system and regulate the real estate market. In 2011, China began to collect real estate tax on a pilot basis in Shanghai and Chongqing, but academics and industry still hold different views on the rationality, taxability, and future development direction of real estate tax.

Zhirou Li (Law and Economics LLM, 2020) and CCLS China Alumni Chapter committee member commented: “I am very pleased to participate in organising and hosting this webinar. We are honoured to have famous scholars from CCLS and Chinese academia, as well as expert practitioners as speakers. Among our audience are academic researchers, legal specialist of real estate companies, taxation lawyers, etc. It was a pleasant and fruitful 3 hours with the wonderful speeches from the speakers and the enthusiastic discussions from the audience. I look forward to more cooperation between speakers and CCLS in the near future. We welcome all the audience to stay tuned for the upcoming events of the CCLS China Chapter.”

We were honoured to have Dr Bernard Schneider, Academic Director of the Institute of Tax Law at CCLS, and some famous Chinese scholars and practitioners to discuss the development of real estate tax in the UK, the US, Canada, and China.
