On 11th July, the CCLS AFSIA Chapter (Alumni and Friends of the School of International Arbitration) organised the Sixth AFSIA Alumni Conference of the School of International Arbitration. This year’s topic was Turbulent Times in Construction and Infrastructure Disputes. The conference, the first in person event of AFSIA over 2 years, took place at 39 Essex Chambers.

The event was attended by over 40 CCLS alumni in addition to other legal professionals from a wide range of law firms and organisations working in the area of International Arbitration.

CCLS alumnus, Mehmet Akif Dede (Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2021), who helped with the organisation of the event sent us the summary:

“The event started with welcoming speeches by Carlos Carvalho (Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2017), AFSIA Steering Committee Member, and Norah Gallagher, the Deputy Director of CCLS School of International Arbitration. An inspiring Keynote Speech on the subject followed, presented by Marion Smith QC. Following the speeches, a panel chaired by Aisha Nadar (Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2007), and comprised of Lilit Nagapetyan (International Dispute Resolution Postgraduate Diploma, 2018), Rute Alves (Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2013), and Thais Fernandes Chebatt (Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2017) shared  insights on the current trends in dispute resolution and challenges in international construction and infrastructure in a COVID influenced market, and answered questions presented by the participants.

After the panel discussion, the speakers and participants had the opportunity to share drinks on the rooftop of 39 Essex Chamber with a lovely view of London!”
