International Careers Week

From Monday 26th February to Thursday 29th February, we are offering an exciting careers programme for our international students - International Careers Week.

The week will take you through themes such as: CV and cover letter writing, how to interview with confidence, networking skills and practice. At the end of the week we will be putting it all into action by planning your next steps and providing the space for small group workshops to best support you.

Whether you want to stay in the UK to work, or you have global ambitions, we want to equip you to showcase your talent in the best way possible.

Monday 26th February

CVs and Cover Letters            

12.00 - 13.00

iQ East Court, Room 0.15

This workshop is for international students and will outline how you write a CV and cover letter for use in the UK. You will find out the key components of a CV and cover letter, how to make your application stand out to an employer and how to tailor your CV and cover letter to a particular opportunity

 

Drop-in session

15.30 - 16.30

Come along to ask your questions and speak to an adviser.

You will be seen on a first-come-first-served basis or in small groups.

We recommend watching relevant sessions on the Careers Discovery Feed in advance of attending the drop-in so that you have the basic knowledge of the subjects. We will not be teaching a whole session - this drop-in is for questions and guidance.

 

Tuesday 27th February

Job Hunting in the UK

10.00 - 11.00

If you are an international student looking for UK work experience, be that an internship, part time work, volunteering or any other kind of work experience, then join this workshop to find out more. You will discover what opportunities are available in the UK, how to identify opportunities and tactics for maximising your chance of success. 

 

Commercial Awareness and Personal Branding

12.00 - 13.00

The Octagon

You must understand the sector you are interested in applying for, and know what employers want in order to create effective applications. In this session we will discuss research and critical thinking methods required to showcase your understanding to recruiters and impress them with your knowledge. You will also be honing your presentation skills and gaining group work experience.

 

Interview Skills

14.00 - 15.00

The Octagon

In this small group session, participants will have the opportunity to learn tips about interviewing in the UK, to respond to typical interview questions and get real-time feedback from our International Careers Consultant. Participants are encouraged to come with their own interview questions that they’d like to practice.  

 

UK-based Alumni Panel and Networking

16.00 - 18.00

The Octagon

Panel event and networking session for international students to meet UK-based international alumni from QM.

This event will begin with a panel discussion from our international alumni: here you will get to know their career journeys and top tips for success.

Following this, you will have the chance to network with members of the panel to ask more in-depth questions and begin networking conversations.

 

Wednesday 28th February

Drop-in session

Come along to ask your questions and speak to an adviser. 

The theme of this session is 'interviews' - if you have particular interview questions that concern you, bring them along and we will workshop your answers.

You will be seen on a first-come-first-served basis or in small groups.

 

Understanding the Graduate Route Visa

Global Café

Blomeley Rooms, Students Union

Come along to meet other international students and find out what support is available to you at Queen Mary. You will be able to shape how you want the Global Café to run, including suggesting what would help you best and what you want to gain from these group meets.

Mainly, we hope for you to meet others and access whatever support you need!

We welcome you to warm up over a hot drink with us, make friends and ask us anything!

 

Thursday 29th February

Alternative UK Work Visa Options for International Students, including Skilled Worker

The focus of this briefing session is to give International Students some headline information and signposting for visa / immigration options which permit work in UK as alternatives to or after the Graduate Route (post study work) visa, with a particular focus on the Skilled Worker visa.

Networking and LinkedIn

Would you like to set up a LinkedIn profile? Do you have a LinkedIn profile but don't know how to use it effectively for your job search? Do you feel LinkedIn can offer more than you are using it for?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, or have any other interest in getting to grips with LinkedIn then come along to this workshop.

 

Skills Workshop

15.00 - 16.00

Employers need you to develop high levels of competency-based skills in order to thrive in the workplace.

These skills are what they will test you on during the application process.

In this workshop, we will undertake activities that will help you articulate these skills, reflect upon them and learn what you will need to do to identify what employers are asking for.
