House of Lords Annual Alumni Reception 2019

Alumni are invited to our fourth Annual Alumni Reception at the House of Lords on Wednesday 23 October 2019. This event is open to all alumni of Queen Mary, Westfield, Barts and The London Hospital medical and dental schools, and from all years and disciplines. 

Hosted by Lord Tim Clement-Jones CBE, Chair of Queen Mary Council, the evening will provide a unique opportunity for alumni to visit this prestigious building and meet up with their contemporaries. Alumni will also have the opportunity to meet the President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London, Professor Colin Bailey, who will update them on recent developments at the University.

This exclusive event, to be held from 6 – 9pm, will include a reception in the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace overlooking the Thames, where drinks and canapés will be served. Please note that guided tours will be available subject to confirmation, depending on the business of the House.

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so we do recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment. As in previous years, we will be operating a waiting list, so if tickets have sold out, please email alumni@qmul.ac.uk and we will contact you if a place becomes available.

Booking closes on Wednesday 2 October but we anticipate that this event will reach capacity ahead of this date.

Meet your host Lord Tim Clement-Jones CBE

Business
Lord Tim Clement-Jones CBE is a Consultant of the global law firm DLA Piper where former positions held include London Managing Partner (2011-16), Head of UK Government Affairs, Chairman of its China and Middle East Desks, International Business Relations Partner and Co-Chairman of Global Government Relations. 

Political
Lord Clement-Jones was Chairman of the Association of Liberal Lawyers 1982-86 and then of the Liberal Party from 1986-88 and played a major part in the merger with the Social Democratic Party to form the Liberal Democrats. He was made CBE for political services in 1988. He was the Chairman of the Liberal Democrats Finance Committee from 1989-98 and Federal Treasurer of the Liberal Democrats from 2005-10. Tim was made a life peer in 1998 and until July 2004 was the Liberal Democrat Health Spokesman and thereafter until 2010 Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Culture, Media and Sport, in the House of Lords. Since 2012, he has been the Chair of Lib Dems in Communications.

Education, Charitable and Voluntary
He is a member of the Advisory Board of the College of Medicine and an Honorary Fellow of the School of Pharmacy, University College London. He is Chair of the Advisory Council of the Institute for Ethical AI in Education, led by Sir Anthony Seldon.

Lord Clement-Jones is a Council Member of the Heart of the City; Fellow of the Public Relations Consultants Association and Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. He is a Governor of Haileybury, an Ambassador for Barts Charity and Patron of Attitude is Everything; Music Venue Trust and 2020Health. Read more.

Please note that in line with security requirements at the Houses of Parliament, alumni will be required to present an official invitation card and valid photo ID upon admittance to the event. To ensure that alumni receive their invitation card on time, they should provide a full up-to-date address when booking their place. If alumni's delivery address for the invitation card is different to their billing address, alumni should please email alumni@qmul.ac.uk to ensure that we have this recorded.

Events cancellation policy
The Development and Alumni Engagement Directorate at Queen Mary University of London reserves the right to cancel an event at its sole discretion. In the event of any such cancellation we will refund the value of the booking or any ticket sold upon proof of purchase. Any online handling fee charged by a third party cannot be refunded. The University excludes any liability for any direct or indirect losses or damages however arising as a result of such cancellation and will not, for example, be responsible for any travel or accommodation costs incurred. In the event of cancellation, the University will use reasonable endeavours to alert those who have booked to attend an event or purchased tickets and details of any cancellation will be posted on the alumni website at qmul.ac.uk/alumni. Guests are responsible for checking this information prior to the event.

Cancellation by booked attendees 
Cancellation of attendance to this event by individuals or groups must be given in writing and received by the Alumni Engagement Team by email to alumni@qmul.ac.uk or via post by Wednesday 2 October 2019 in order to receive a refund. Those who fail to attend or cancel their attendance within this time frame, for whatever reason, will not receive a refund.
