Curriculum Design

Module Title: Curriculum Design (ADP7218)

Convener: Dr Steph Fuller

Programme: This is the third compulsory module for PGCAP

Delivery mode: The module is offered in blended mode with the choice of in person or online seminar groups.  We will work in mixed disciplinary groups and use a flipped learning approach with a range of activities to be completed in participants' own time.

Credits: 15 (Level 7)

Module Description:

This module is the third compulsory module on the PGCAP and runs over one semester. The module builds on the topics studied in the first two modules on the programme. It supports participants to take a broader view of higher education and to work at a unit, module or programme level to engage in a piece of curriculum redesign or a new piece of design.

The module looks at theory and practice of curriculum design, and supports participants to review aims and ILOs, education approach, assessment and feedback strategies, evaluation plans, and to consider their curriculum design within broader contexts. There are seven compulsory topics and participants will choose from a range of optional topics those which are most relevant for their curriculum project.

This module is aligned to Descriptor D2 of the UKPSF and, therefore, offers participants the opportunity to demonstrate a broad understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as key contributions to high quality student learning.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this module participants should be able to

Academic content:

  • Explain key curriculum design frameworks and the pedagogic underpinnings of these approaches
  • Identify effective approaches to assessment, feedback, teaching and learning methods
  • Describe the mechanisms and implications of quality assurance and enhancement for academic practice
  • Apply evidence-based evaluation approaches and inclusive practice within curriculum design
  • Identify relevant wider contexts for curriculum design and analyse these in relation to your curriculum project

Disciplinary skills:

  • Design, teach and provide support and guidance effectively on sessions, modules or programmes of study - as appropriate for their role - through selective use of methods, approaches and methodologies for active learning than align with measurable learning outcomes
  • Design effective curricula in face to face and online environments that constructively align with learning outcomes, learner level and the disciplinary requirements

Attributes:

  • Develop a student-centred approach to curriculum design, considering diversity of students and established guidelines for accessibility and inclusivity
  • Design curricula to maximise learners' equality of opportunity
  • Use feedback, reflection and educational research for continuous reflection and improvement of practice
  • Learn from, and work with, disciplines other than your own
