The Caroline Skeel Archives Reading Room

In the early 1960s there was a keen interest in drama at Westfield College, and open air productions of Latin and Greek plays were presented. These informal photographs show an open air production of Sophocles’ ‘Electra’ by The Classical Society.

Dramatic productions at Westfield benefitted from the admission of men to the college in the mid-1960s. Not only did the Dramatic Society no longer have to import male actors (all-female productions had died out in the 1940s), but Berridge House, residential accommodation provided for male students, included a hall properly equipped for stage performances.
