Men's Wellbeing Group

How are you, really?

Why a men's group?

A recent survey revealed 78% of male students have never accessed support via ACS yet 89% felt they would benefit from a men’s group.

Many men experience pressure to act in ways that adhere to society’s views of masculinity. This can often mean refusing to reach out for help and support in order to appear tough and invulnerable, causing many to break alone and in silence. It is also well documented that men (74%) are at higher risk of suicide than women (26%) because the fear of shame can feel worse than death itself.

For these reasons, this Men's group, run by members of Advice & Counselling Service (ACS), offers a safe and non-judgmental space for those who identify as male at QMUL.

What will the group be like?

This is not a traditional therapy group as such, but an opportunity to explore, learn, and discuss your experiences of being a man in today's society, including any challenges you face.

The group will run over 5 weeks and consist of 90-minute sessions covering various topics with the hope of generating interesting and thought provoking discussion. There will be time for questions and debriefing at the end.

The following topics will be covered (but not limited to):

  • Communication
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Suicide
  • Coping Mechanisms
  • Money
  • Masculinity
  • Emotions
  • Self-care
  • Barriers to accessing support
  • Isolation
  • Shame
  • Expectations
