Supporting documents

You will need to provide the applicable supporting documents with your application for Student immigration permission. The documents you need will depend on your individual circumstances, so please read all the information below to check what you will need to provide.

Requirements for all students

Documents students may need to provide (depending on your situation)

  • Qualifications and English language assessment, unless you are applying for permission to study a course at degree level (RQF level 6) or above at Queen Mary (see below)
  • Evidence of your finances showing sufficient funds for the stipulated period in the correct format, unless you are applying in the UK and have held permission to be here for 12 months or longer, or if you qualify under the differential evidence agreement
  • Additional evidence if you are showing funds in your parentsaccount, unless you are applying in the UK and have held permission to be here for 12 months or longer, or if you qualify under the differential evidence agreement
  • TB test certificate if applying from overseas and resident in an applicable country
  • Official translation of any documents not in English or Welsh
  • ATAS clearance if studying an applicable course
  • Letter of permission from your parents if you are 16 or 17
  • Legal documents as evidence of a name change if you have changed your name (NB an affidavit is not acceptable)
  • Evidence of permission to be in a third country if you are applying in a country other than your country of nationality (NB you CANNOT apply in a country which you are visiting)
  • Current BRP card (if you have one)
  • Additional documents if you are planning to bring  family members with you as your dependants
  • Letter of consent if you are currently in the UK and are financially sponsored by a government or an international scholarship agency or if you have been financially sponsored by a government or international organisation within the last 12 months
  • If there have been gaps in your study, please include an explanation and evidence (if applicable) of what you have been doing during the time when you have not been studying.
  • Any other documents relevant to your application
  • If you are applying from within the UK for a course at Queen Mary, your CAS should confirm that you have successfully completed your previous course. You do not need to include evidence with your supporting documents, but you may be asked for further evidence when a decision is being made on your application.
  • The required documents for an application can be original or high quality copy. UKVI reserve the right to see the original documents or contact the issuing authority to verify any documents submitted in support of an application.

Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS)

If you need ATAS clearance, you must obtain the ATAS certificate before requesting a CAS.

A CAS is a record that Queen Mary creates about you and your programme of studies on a secure UKVI database. It is not a paper document.

If Queen Mary can sponsor you under the Student Route, the University will create a CAS. They will email you the reference number and details of all the information Queen Mary have provided to UKVI. You need both the number and the information to complete your Student application form.

A CAS can be issued up to six months before the start of the programme.

You cannot use a CAS if:

  • you have already used it in an application that was granted or refused; or
  • it was issued more than six months ago; or
  • it was withdrawn by either the university or UKVI

How to Request a CAS:

New students can follow the procedure on theAdmissions and CAS page.

Existing students can follow the Instructions for submitting a CAS request for continuing students.

Check that all the information in your CAS statement is correct.

Updating your CAS:

After it has been issued, your CAS can be updated if necessary. To request an update on your CAS:

New students: contact cas-admissions@qmul.ac.uk

Existing students: contact casinfo@qmul.ac.uk

Differential Evidence Requirement

Nationals of the following countries listed in paragraph ST 22.1 of Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules qualify under the differential evidence requirement if they are applying for Student Immigration permission.

As a national who makes an application for Student Immigration permission under the differential evidence requirement, you do not need to provide the following with your supporting documents:

  1. Evidence that you have the required money for your studies
  2. Evidence of your previous qualifications (as listed in the “Evidence used” section of your CAS statement)

You must still meet the Student Immigration permission requirements at the time you submit your visa application. Even though you are not required to submit the above evidence, you must have it in your possession.

After you have submitted your immigration application, the Entry Clearance Officer or Caseworker who considers your immigration application can contact you and ask you to provide your evidence. A Border Force Officer may also ask you to show your evidence when you arrive in the UK and you should carry it in your hand luggage.

If you are a national that qualifies under the differential evidence requirement, there is no need for you to submit the evidence if you are not asked for it. This could cause further delays in your application.

If you have been in the UK for at least 12 months with permission at the time you make your application, and you are applying from within the UK, you do not need to have funds. See Funds for your Student visa application.

Passport or travel document

You will need to submit your current passport or travel document.

Make sure your name and other details are correct in your passport. When Queen Mary issues you with any documents (such as your degree certificate and your CAS) we will copy your name and other details exactly as they appear in your passport.

If you are applying from overseas, you will also need to submit any previous passports you have held unless they have been lost, stolen or returned to the issuing authority.

You will need to take your passport to your biometric appointment to be scanned and you can usually keep your passport whilst your application is pending.

*You cannot travel outside the UK before you have a decision on your visa application. If you travel before you receive a decision, your application will be withdrawn, and you must make a new application before being able to return to the UK*

Evidence of your qualifications and English language assessment

Queen Mary is a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance, so if you are studying a course at degree level (RQF level 6) or above, you do not need to provide evidence of your qualifications, including English language. Your CAS should include details of your qualifications and English language assessment.

If you are studying below degree level, you will need to provide the qualifications listed on your CAS, unless you are a national listed under the 'Differential evidence requirement' under paragraph ST 22.1 of Appendix ST of the Immigration Rules. If you are studying below degree level, you should provideeducational qualificationslisted in your CAS, or a print-out from the online checking service.

Tuberculosis (TB) Test

You will need to have a Tubercolosis (TB) test if you are coming to the UK for more than six months and you are resident in one of the listed countries on the UK government website.

You do not need to take a TB test if:

  • you are applying for your visa in the UK; or
  • you are coming to the UK for less than six months; or
  • you lived for at least six months in a country where TB screening is not required by the UK, and you’ve been away from that country for no more than six months

If you do not need to take a TB test because you have lived for at least six months in a country that does not require TB screening, and you have been away from that country for no more than six months, then it would be a good idea for you to highlight this in a cover letter and in the 'additional information' section of the Student immigration application form. You may also wish to provide evidence of your immigration status in the third country (eg a residence permit for this country) and evidence about what you were doing in this country (eg a letter from your School or Employer in the third country).

For more information about Tuberculosis testing, visit the UK Government website.

If your test shows that you do not have TB, you will be given a certificate which is valid for six months. You will need to apply for your visa within this six-month validity period.

Translations

If a document is not in English or Welsh, you must provide an English translation of the document. You must provide a fully certified translation from a professional translator or translation company that can be independently verified by UKVI. The translation must include all of the following information:

  • confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the document
  • the date of translation
  • the full name and signature of the translator or an official from the translation company
  • the translator or translation company’s contact details.

Keep copies of your documents

Warning: You must keep a copy of your online application form, and everything you submit with your immigration application, as well as any correspondence you receive from UKVI. This includes your passport and any supporting documents you submit (eg bank statements and certificates).

This is very important as you may need to refer to the exact documents you submitted in support of your application in case of a refusal of your application, if you wish to challenge the decision or submit a new application.

If there is a problem with your application, you may need to show copies to a Welfare Adviser so that they can provide you with advice.
