Emeritus Professor of Film Studies

My published work has been mainly on Spanish cinema (especially Buñuel and Almodóvar), Hollywood (especially the Musical, Romantic Comedy, and the Biblical Epic), and British cinema (especially Carol Reed). My most recent publication is Written on the Wind (BFI, 2013).

I curated the 2006 NFT Carol Reed season, and co-curated with Charles Drazin the 2008 BFI South Bank David Lean season.
