Applications are now open.

Please explore the tabs below for detailed information on eligibility, fees, the application process, and everything you need to know before applying.

This has been such a valuable experience, and I’ve loved the opportunity to stay and learn in Malta. I am really loving the country. The teaching has been patient, clear, and supportive, with complex situations always explained well. I’ve felt comfortable asking questions and have learned a huge amount.
— Imogen Louise Malpas

Visas & Immigration

Malta is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Requirements depend on your nationality.

Please see link provided: General Visa Questions - Missions Malta

It is your responsibility to ensure you hold the correct visa or immigration permission before arriving in Malta. Apply as early as possible — allow at least 8–12 weeks for visa processing. All placement offers are conditional on holding the appropriate immigration permission.

EU / EEA / Swiss nationals

No visa required. You may travel freely to Malta under EU freedom of movement rights.

🌍 Non-EU nationals

A Schengen or national visa may be required. Check your requirements via VFS Global in your country.

UK passport holders amongst others are visa exempt. Please refer to the list above if you are unsure.

If you are a non-EU national but hold a valid residence permit issued by an EU/EEA/Swiss country, or hold dual nationality including an EU/EEA/Swiss nationality, you may not require a visa to enter Malta. Please check the requirements applicable to your specific circumstances before travelling.

VFS Global operates Visa Application Centres on behalf of the relevant Maltese diplomatic missions and provides information on submitting visa applications and supporting documentation. The final decision on whether a visa is granted is made by the relevant Maltese authorities.

πŸ“‹ Visa type for electives

Most visiting students will require a short-stay (Type C) Schengen visa for placements of 90 days or fewer. Longer placements may require a Type D national visa.

πŸ“„ Invitation letter

QMUL Malta can provide an official acceptance letter once your placement is confirmed and fees are paid. This may support your visa application.

Important Points

    • Contact the Malta Foreign Affairs at visa.foreign@gov.mt or visit VFS Global at the earliest opportunity to check what documents are required for your visa application.
    • Request your QMUL Malta acceptance letter only after your placement is formally confirmed and all fees paid.
    • Allow at least 8–12 weeks for processing. We cannot delay your placement start date due to visa delays.
    • Your visa must cover the full duration of your placement plus a travel buffer.
    • The School reserves the right to withdraw an offer if the correct immigration status cannot be confirmed.

For the most up-to-date information, please consult Malta Foreign Affairs and VFS Global.
