Copyright Licensing Agency data collection exercise

From Monday 19 September 2022 until Friday 28 October 2022, the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) will be conducting a remote data collection exercise regarding the photocopying and printing published works. This information helps the CLA to pay the authors, publishers and visual artists whose work is being copied. Our role is an integral and much valued part of this process. Some of the creators who, as a result of this exercise, will receive royalties for the re-use of their work may even be staff at our university!

During this time, the following actions will need to be carried out by all Queen Mary staff-

  1. All photocopying of printed publications such as books, journals, periodicals, etc. as well as digital originals which are printed out and then on-copied, should be reported. This can be done using an online form. Please note that scans should not be reported- only photocopies.
  2. Copies of all print course packs printed for this academic year should be sent to library-copyright@qmul.ac.uk before Friday 21 October 2022. Please note the number of copies made/students it was made available to on the front along with the name of the institution.
  3. Every School and Professional Services Department needs to provide a list of the full URLs of the websites they use most often in the course of their work and/or professional development.  They can list as many as they like but should provide ten as a minimum. They may include free to view pages, subscriptions, blogs, as well as any other kinds of sites (examples: the Times Higher Education website, BBC News, Wonkhe). However, there is no need to include search engines, social networks, or web-based tools such as Sharepoint, MyHR and Agresso. Please download the following spreadsheet to record this information. Please return the spreadsheet to library-copyright@qmul.ac.uk by Friday 21 October.

Please note that this exercise is only for staff members to carry out, not students. Research copying undertaken by an individual for private study or personal use is also not included.  However, copying made during the course of group or commercial research work is included in the exercise.  By commercial, we mean research that is funded or partly funded by a third party (commerce, industry, public corporations).

If you have any questions about the above, please send an email to library-copyright@qmul.ac.uk
