Since I completed my LLB degree in the UK, I always knew that Queen Mary enjoys high fame and top teaching and research faculties, as well as close links with law firms and institutions – both nationally and internationally. All this was beneficial to me to receive the best education in my interested area and accumulate precious practical experience.
Our lecturers had a strong academic ability as well as a sense of responsibility. For instance, our mergers and acquisitions lecturers voluntarily offered us many extra Q&A sessions and had always answered our emails promptly even during the holiday. It was a difficult time for everyone in the March lockdown, but our lecturers were committed to progressing our learning. Thanks to their help, I achieved a distinction in my mergers and acquisitions module and finally achieved a distinction in my overall LLM study.
I would also like to mention that our Dissertation Director had offered me great help when I had to undergo surgery during my dissertation writing. The school has a considerable procedure that can help students overcome unexpected difficulties.
I have participated in many extra-curriculum programmes in the CCLS, including qLegal, the mentor scheme and weekend courses offered by the career department. I strongly recommend all of these programmes. In particular, I was a qLegal student advisor and this experience has benefited me a lot. I made many friends from the qLegal team and learned a great deal from my peers and our supervisors. Secondly, I was able to work with many professional lawyers in different fields. We received training from external lawyers from top law firms and we also worked with them in advising our clients. During my undergraduate study, I participated in some pro bono activities, but qLegal offered me the best legal volunteering experience, which I believe will benefit me for many years.
My advice is to check the student email from the first day and do not miss out on any sign-up or registrations. Some extra-curriculum programmes open their application during freshers’ week. It was important to keep yourself updated about school events.
Yes. Besides, I was the specialism representative of my specialism. This role provided me some key working skills, including event planning and organisational techniques. With the help from our career department, I organised many academic and career events which also enhanced my network.
