The decision to pursue an LLM in Intellectual Property Law at QMUL was relatively easy. Coming from the twin island Caribbean Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, I needed a programme that could fulfil a dual purpose, namely, (1) satisfy my personal interests in intellectual property and (2) equip me with the relevant knowledge and necessary tools to support my islands’ vibrant creative industries. Out of all the intellectual property (‘IP’) law programmes I researched in the USA, wider Europe and the Caribbean, the LLM in IP Law offered by QMUL’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) was the only programme that rose to the occasion. With a wide selection of modules ranging from fundamentals such as copyright and trademarks to more in-depth, comparative and internationally focussed modules such as commercialisation and global IP, CCLS provided the perfect environment for me to accomplish my goals. Most importantly, no module was mandatory. This gave me the flexibility to choose any combination of modules, even those outside my specialism. It was this feature that stood out. At CCLS my course of study was unique, tailor-made and relevant to my needs.
It is undeniable that the IP programme at CCLS is world-class. Taught by pioneers and experts in the IP field such as Professors. Uma Suthersanen, Johanna Gibson and Gaetano Dimita, to name a few, you are guaranteed the most dynamic, comprehensive and exciting IP experience any programme can offer. As if that was not enough, an unexpected highlight was the range of guest lecturers/professors that complemented the highly qualified academics at CCLS. Guests from leading IP firms like Mishcon de Reya, top pharmaceutical companies like GlaxoSmithKline, large museums such as the V&A and music industry leaders like CISAC all brought a practical perspective to my learning and helped condition my mind to areas of IP that I had never previously considered.
Studying at QMUL has deepened my appreciation for different cultures. The diversity of the IP programme has facilitated friendships with colleagues from all around the world. The well-structured and intellectually challenging IP modules have strengthened my critical thinking and analysis skills, which will surely assist in my future endeavours. Moreover, the support given by QMUL staff, professors and IP dissertation supervisors throughout the programme has made my LLM journey unforgettable. The care, encouragement and invaluable support given, especially during a global pandemic, has made this a remarkable experience.

Also, ensure that you take time to explore the magnificent city of London. Adventures to museums, theatres and seasonal festive destinations like Winter Wonderland act as great rewards after a long day of studying.
