Queen Mary-Paris 1 joint Law programme assembles experts for a special panel on the Rule of Law

The panel took place on 2 October at Panthéon Centre in Paris and featured Dr Matthieu Burnay (Queen Mary), Dr Noam Gur (Queen Mary), Mr Nicolas Hachez (the OECD), and Dr Kolja Raube (KU Leuven) discussing ‘The Rule of Law as a Contested Concept’.

The event delved into theoretical and applied dilemmas surrounding the Rule of Law, with panellists approaching the topic from their specialised angles.

Dr Gur discussed the complex dynamics of the Rule of Law and morality; Dr Burnay inquired into legality in the specific context of the Chinese system; Mr Hachez explored the Rule of Law’s operation in international relation, with specific attention to the OECD’s soft law approach; and Dr Raube considered the relationship between the Rule of Law and democracy, with a focus on the EU.

After the presentations, the floor was opened to students for an interactive question and answer session involving a class-wide discussion of current challenges and contrasting approaches to the Rule of Law.

The panel was delivered as part of the Jurisprudence and Legal Theory module taught at the Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University on the Double Degree English and French Law. Students on the double degree spend their first two years studying at Queen Mary in London and final two years at Sorbonne in Paris.
