The letter acknowledges the efforts to improve operational aspects of abortion services in the past year, such as 17 of 19 materinty hospitals now provide care, but it states that several barriers to equitable and accessible services remain. These include ongoing criminalisation and the mandatory three-day wait, among other issues.

Dr Ruth Fletcher, Reader in Medical Law at Queen Mary University of Law, joined service providers, civil society organisations, academics, and other relevant stakeholders in signing the letter, which also outlines the necessary legislative and operational steps the Irish government needs to take to address this.
