Fitness to Practice Clinic

Fitness to Practice posterThe Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre FtP Support Services provides free practical support and advice to nursing and dental professionals under investigation by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Dental Council GDC.

We are a student led service that provides assistance to those who do not have Union representation and cannot afford private legal support. The students are supervised and assisted by lawyers with fitness to practice experience.

What assistance is provided?

We can provide assistance with:

  • An NMC or GDC investigation
  • Providing a response to NMC or GDC case examiners
  • Help preparing for a fitness to practice hearing including an interim order application, interim order review, substantive hearing or substantive order review
  • Making a referral to solicitors or barristers who may be able to offer pro bono representation

How can I access the service?

If the NMC or GDC have confirmed that you are under investigation, please contact us.

A volunteer will contact you within 3 days to organise an initial appointment (either by Zoom or phone) to understand your need for support and advice. A follow up appointment will then be organised for you to talk through your case in more detail and written advice is provided.

You can contact the service at any point in the NMC or GDC investigation, however the earlier in the investigation you make contact the more likely that effective practical support and advice can be provided.
