The University in brief

  • Private, highly selective, liberal arts university founded in 1830
  • Safe, suburban campus is 10 km / six miles from downtown Richmond, 140 km / 90 miles south of Washington, DC, 160 km / 100 miles east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and 160 km / 100 miles west of the Atlantic coast

Academics

  • More than 100 majors, minors and concentrations
  • Ranked in the top 30 Best Liberal Arts Colleges by US News and World Report magazine
  • Excellent course work is available in the arts, humanities and social sciences, but Richmond also offers several “plus” factors not commonly found at liberal arts institutions:

    • A professional law school granting the JD (Juris Doctor) and LLM degrees

  • The Department of Political Science is focused primarily on US politics, offering visiting international students a unique opportunity to learn about the US system
  • Richmond students have been recipients of the prestigious Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, Clarendon, Truman and Fulbright scholarships, among many others

Room and Board

  • Nearly 90% of students live in university residences
  • Most residence halls are single-sex; some are mixed with alternating floors for men and women
  • Most rooms are doubles; having a roommate is an important part of US university life
  • Students take meals in award-winning, on-campus dining hall
  • On-campus apartments (for fourth-year students) have kitchen facilities

On-campus life and activities

  • Host family program welcomes visiting students
  • Ambassadors program provides a ready social circle
  • The International Student Advisory Board is a bridge from the international student community to the Office of International Education and University departments
  • About one third of the student body is involved in the Greek system (14 fraternities and sororities)

  • The Global Music Series held throughout the year is free
  • Prominent speakers (e.g., Judy Shepard, Philip Glass, Ikal Angelei, Barack Obama) from government, industry and other sectors sometimes visit the campus
  • The Modlin Center and other venues on campus host many dramatic and musical performances; many are free or low-cost
  • Free shuttle service to shopping and nightlife areas downtown
  • ZipCars are available for rent on campus
  • Free use of Green Bikes on campus
  • Recreation and Wellness offers camping, skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding and other activities
  • Libraries (music, law and University-wide) offer 500,000 books, over 100,000 periodicals, and thousands of DVDs and CDs

  • The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement provides coordinated access to community-based volunteer opportunities
  • The University offers 187 student organizations including honorary societies, religious groups, a student newspaper and a radio station.  This total includes 27 club sports (open to visiting students) such as ice hockey, quidditch, rugby, soccer and track.

As an exchange student, you will be registered for a full-time non-degree program and will be able to register for a variety of courses at Columbia College or at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). A full-time course load is 15-18 points per semester, which usually means five classes. At a minimum, you must register for at least 12 points each semester. Classes meet for two to four hours per week and can consist of lectures, seminars, labs, and discussion sessions. At Columbia, you are allowed to take courses in a variety of academic departments as long as you meet the specific course prerequisites. Some courses are restricted to students majoring in the area, other by permission of the instructor or the department. Students can choose classes that are listed as open to students from Columbia College or SEAS. Students may NOT take courses from any of the professional schools at Columbia: Graduate School of Architecture, School of the Arts, Continuing Education, Dental Medicine, School of International and Public Affairs, Jewish Theological Seminary, Columbia Journalism School, Columbia Law School, College of Physicians and Surgeons, School of Nursing, Mailman School of Public Health, Teachers College, Union Theological Seminary. Access to courses at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Columbia Business School are limited.

Over the summer, you should begin looking at the course listings on-line to aid in your course planning. During orientation, you will meet with your academic advisor to plan a class schedule for the term. Course descriptions and class details can be found at the following websites:

The Bulletins include information about all departments, course offerings, and course descriptions. These are your definitive compilation of College or SEAS course offerings and policies. Each department of the College and SEAS is listed there, along with their contact information, website, course lists for the term, and the structure of the major, along with special notes and instructions. Note that all courses with an “X” are offered in the fall while those with a “Y” are offered in the spring.

The Directory of Classes lists the most up-to-date course offerings and indicates the time and day of class meetings, points (credits), instructors, and current student enrollments. This is a useful tool for setting up your day-to-day schedule and to prepare for registration: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/,

Please note that the Directory of Classes is a collection of all of the classes across the variety of undergraduate and professional schools at Columbia University. Exchange students are limited to College or SEAS courses, except where specific courses in other schools are listed as open to Columbia College and/or SEAS undergraduates with special permission.

Howard University, located in Washington D.C. 2 miles from the US Capitol Building, is an institution that has historically had a student body from a BME background.

The exchange allows two QM students to spend the autumn semester at Howard taking three academic modules. Instead of module no. 4, the student will do an internship provided by Howard University (with either a member of Congress, a congressional office, or with the Mayor’s office). This internship would earn QM credit. In reciprocity, Howard students will come to QM and take three QM academic modules and do an internship organised by Simon Woolley, Chair of Operation Black Vote and a QM alumni.

Monterrey Courses [PDF 2,967KB] Updated document UPDATED 12/10/18

The table below tells you about our partner universities and which QMUL academic schools and departments they have agreements with. If you are able to find a programme of study that complements your degree programme from one of our partner institutions that has not been approved by your academic department, please contact Harry Gibney (h.gibney@qmul.ac.uk).

Important information

  • Students should confirm with their departmental coordinator that their degree programme includes an option to study abroad on exchange.
  • Students should not submit or complete any materials for the partner institution until an offer to study abroad and nomination to the partner have been made by QMUL.
  • Our exchange destinations offer a diverse range of cultural and social environments, and you should be aware that societal attitudes and norms can be quite different from those in the UK. These differences are often reflected in the legal environment. You should familiarise yourself with these differences and bear them in mind when deciding whether to apply for the exchange programme and where to apply to. You need to consider whether you are going to be comfortable living and studying abroad in your chosen destination. You should pay particular attention to differences in areas such as:  freedom of political expression and rights to free speech; freedom of sexual expression and attitudes to same sex relationships; attitudes and the law pertaining to alcohol and other drugs. The age limits for participating in various activities varies according to location, and in most (if not all) countries, ignorance of the law is not a defence against prosecution.
