Erasmus+ funding

The Erasmus+ Programme is the European Union's flagship programme supporting education, training, youth and sport. Erasmus+ provides students with opportunities to study, train and gain international experience abroad while receiving financial support to help contribute towards the additional costs associated with their mobility period. Erasmus+ also supports the development of intercultural awareness, language skills, personal growth and employability.

Through Erasmus+, students can undertake a period of study at a partner university in another participating country (in Europe) and benefit from academic, professional and personal development opportunities. The programme aims to help participants develop new skills, broaden their perspectives and enhance their future career prospects. Erasmus+ funding is also availavle to students who are undertaking a work placement in Europe as part of their Queen Mary degree (e.g. year in industry placement or internship as a Modern Languages degree student)

Erasmus+ funding for student placements

Students may be able to receive Erasmus+ funding to support their mobility period abroad.

Funding is intended as a contribution towards the additional costs of studying in Europe and should not be considered sufficient to cover all living and travel expenses. The amount awarded may vary depending on the host country, the duration of the mobility and the funding rules applicable in the relevant academic year.

Eligible participants may also be entitled to additional financial support where specific widening participation or inclusion criteria are met, subject to programme regulations and available funding. See are still to be confirmed for 2027/28.

Please see below for further information.

To be considered for Erasmus+ funding, students must:

  • Be fully enrolled at Queen Mary University of London.
  • Have been selected to study abroad at an Erasmus+ exchange parter or have had their semester-/yearlong work placement in a programme country approved by their academic department/school
  • Complete all required Erasmus+ documentation before, during and after their mobility period.
  • Meet any academic and administrative requirements set by both Queen Mary and the host institution/work placement provider.

Additional eligibility criteria may apply depending on the funding arrangements for the academic year concerned.

Students do not normally need to submit a separate application for Erasmus+ funding if they have applied for and been selected to take part in the Student Exchange Programme and are going to an partner university in Europe.

The Global Partnerships and Opportunities team will contact eligible students with details of the funding process, required documentation, payment arrangements and deadlines.

Students are strongly encouraged to complete all Erasmus+ documentation promptly, as delayed submission will result in immediate withdrawal of funding offered. Erasmus+ is external funding and strict rules apply.
