Alternative English Language Qualifications

We also accept a range of alternative qualifications to demonstrate your level of English Language proficiency.   Approved English language tests must have been taken within two years of the proposed course start date.

Exceptions

There are certain circumstances where you may not be required to have an English Language test to prove your proficiency.  If you hold a degree from a majority English speaking country or your degree has been taught and examined in English, please read our Postgraduate Guidelines.

Student Visa Regulations

If you will require a Student visa to study in the UK, you must meet the minimum English Language requirements to meet the UKVI regulations (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent in Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening).  However, many of our courses require higher grades.

Pre-sessional English Language Courses

If you fall slightly below our standard English language requirements, you may consider one of our Pre-sessional English courses.  Please note that you will require a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for entry to our Thirteen week pre-sessional courses. Only IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic (UKVI), LanguageCert International ESOL SELT and Trinity ISE are accepted.   The Pre-sessional English course requirements are published according to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered.

Postgraduate guidelines

  • If you hold a degree from a majority English speaking country (provided we recognise the degree and deem it equivalent to UK degree) you may use this degree to satisfy the English language requirements for entry, provided the degree was completed no more than 5 years before the start date of the course to which you are applying.
  • Also, degrees from Majority English Speaking Countries normally need to be delivered in those countries to be considered. If such degrees are delivered outside of those countries we will consider on an individual basis with evidence that they were taught and examined in English.
  • If your first degree was taught and examined fully in English for a duration of at least 2 years, and no more than 5 years have passed since this was awarded, the Admissions Office will consider the degree for English language acceptability on a case by case basis.  You will need to supply an academic transcript or confirmation letter from central university administration confirming that the course was taught and examined in English for at least 2 years. Please note, for some degrees taught and examined in English, we may only consider them for meeting our English language requirements if entry to the degree was granted through an English test that Queen Mary routinely considers for meeting its English requirements - these will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Other qualifications may be taken into consideration for meeting the English language requirements and will be assessed on an individual basis.
  • If you have at least one year of recent employment using English as the main language of communication, we can consider a letter from your employer confirming your English language proficiency in all four component scores in addition to a Queen Mary approved English language test outside the standard validity period.
  • We will accept evidence of current full registration with the General Medical Council, General Dental Council or General Pharmaceutical Council in lieu of an English language qualification.

For further queries regarding acceptable English language qualifications, please contact the Admissions team directly via email to pgtadmissions@qmul.ac.uk.
