There is no better month than National Scholarship Month to release that the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Foundation has offered a bursary to three BSc Accounting and Management students at the School of Business and Management.
The School of Business and Management is delighted to announce that ICAEW Foundation have chosen three of our BSc Accounting and Management students to be awarded their Changing Futures Bursary.
The ICAEW Foundation provides bursaries through UK universities, for talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds wanting to study for an accountancy related degree at university.
ICAEW Foundation is proud to support a number of students to undertake accountancy and finance degrees at Queen Mary University, through our Changing Futures bursary programme. "We are also pleased that our bursaries have played a role in Queen Mary being recognised as one of the Top 5 universities in London for social mobility. ICAEW Foundation has provided bursary support for 63 ambitious students from financially challenged backgrounds to undertake accountancy and finance related degrees in universities across the UK, and in Hong Kong and Cyprus, since the Foundation was set up. Our Building Futures bursary programme, for students of new professional accountancy qualifications in Malawi, Ghana, Cambodia and Lesotho, has allocated funds for 120 bursaries since its launch in 2015. Our work contributes to the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3,4 and 10.
The winners of the bursaries will receive £4000 towards living costs each year, for all three years of the programme. This type of financial aid is instrumental in helping these students make the most of their degree despite their circumstances.
Dr Ishani Chandrasekara, Director of Queen Mary’s BSc Accounting and Management would like to thank the ICAEW Foundation trustees for their generous donations, as we have continued the vital work of providing life-changing opportunities to our BSc Accounting and Management students. These awards aim to break down the barriers facing students from groups underrepresented in Higher Education, thus giving them the foundation to achieve their dreams. Being raised in a household with financial struggles, I have experienced many of the challenges and obstacles that our students face at university. I was able to complete my undergraduate degree, postgraduate qualification, and doctoral studies without fear of financial stress because of various scholarships. It is a great honour to work with the ICAEW Foundation and its trustees to truly make a difference to our students as they are taking their first steps in an academic journey, have all benefited enormously.
