Post Internship Module gets Underway

Published:

Twelve final year undergraduates have become the first cohort to take BUS351 Business Internship Project, a new post-internship module in SBM.

This module reflects back on the Summer Internship experience. Through group workshops and individual supervision meetings, students draw on management knowledge from throughout their degrees to examine the critical management issues faced by the internship organisation, trends in graduate employment in the relevant sector, and a personal evaluation of one’s own skills and career development plans.

Students are assessed by a final report, as well as a mid-term presentation, to which the internship employers may also be invited.

The aim behind the module is to help students, who have been on internships, relate their theoretical knowledge of management and organisations to their own practical insights and experiences, and reflect their own development as part of this process.

As Arjun Jethwa, who interned at investment bank JP Morgan, puts it:

I underestimated the learning and reflective elements of a summer internship, so this was a great way to discuss and analyse some of the things I had experienced…there is a focus on open discussions and engaging with peers where we contribute our own personal experiences.

Similarly, Oskar Brugrand, who interned at international relocation firm Dwellworks, says:

This module gives me the chance to reflect upon my internship and apply academic knowledge to a real-life experience.

Jonas Sunde, who interned at information services company Alpha Sights, agrees:

As an internship goes by so quickly, it is very nice to have a module where you can better understand the skills you acquired and the different opportunities/threats to different industries and the graduate job market.

Shivam Amin, who interned at government agency Get Set for Growth, when asked why he chose the module, quipped:

The module organiser is great persuader who has got me trapped into the module!

But he followed up quickly, reflecting

Having done an internship, I never considered evaluating myself and understanding what I did right and wrong. This module allows me to do exactly that.

Finally, Thea Rudd, who interned in the Comms and Marketing team at Kuehne & Nagel UK, looks ahead:

I hope this module will help prepare me for future internships, so that I can both perform to best of my ability, and take advantage of the experience to the fullest.
