Queen Mary University of London is a Russell Group university. It is based in London. One of the most global and internationally diverse cities in the world. This is reflected in our campus community. Queen Mary has students from 162 different countries including 450 students from India. 88 of those are in the School of Business and Management (SBM). 88 out of 2,000 students.
We asked one of our Indian students Nitya in her 3rd year studying BSc Business Management to share her experiences of being an international student here at SBM.
University and Subject Choices
I chose to study in the UK and Queen Mary because of its reputation. My sister is studying here and she gave me a good insight into what it is like to be a student here. Studying in the UK is an opportunity for me to develop and find myself without having to call on mum and dad all the time. At Queen Mary University of London the campus is in one place, it has an international outlook, is part of the Russell Group and is a top 120 university in the world.
I wanted to study business because my father is a businessman. He has always inspired me. When I was little, I used to go to his factory. In addition, I studied business for two years before I came to Queen Mary University of London because I want to go into the business world. So studying BSc Business Management is an opportunity to study everything then specialise.
Diversity
What I have enjoyed about being a student from India is the international campus community. You get to meet people from all over the world. I have experienced many different cultures from eating each other’s home country foods to celebrating cultural events. Studying in the UK is different from India. However, the teachers are so supportive.
The British and London Way of Life
British culture is very different from Indian culture and you are apprehensive about not getting the language or accent. However, studying here is an opportunity to grow and learn, solve problems on your own and live alone without calling on Mum and Dad. You have to be open-minded and try new things. As long as you can be yourself, be open to new cultures and ways of living because you may not get this chance again. I will miss being part of this global university.
Student Life
In my first year I was a member of the Business and Management society and the Baking society. I took on a QConsult project in my second year and currently I am a Student Ambassador.
Career Aspirations
When I complete my studies, I would like to work for two years then do MBA and then apply for graduate schemes in the UK which SBM career’s team will help me with.
