Is it a cheap shot to criticise employee engagement?

Rob Briner, Professor of Organisational Psychology at Queen Mary was quoted in a Financial Times article which questions: is engagement really lifting performance? Or do better businesses spur more engagement? Professor Briner said there is almost no good quality evidence to answer the two most basic questions about engagement: does it really do anything and if so, can organisations do anything about engagement?
