SBM academic receives best paper award at the British Academy of Management conference (BAM 2015)

Dr Panos Panagiotopoulos, Lecturer in Information Management, won the best developmental paper award for the Human Resource Management track at the recent annual British Academy of Management (BAM) conference (Portsmouth, 8-10 September 2015).

Dr Panagiotopoulos received the award from Professor Pawan Budhwar (Aston University) for his paper entitled "Trade union renewal and social media: A study of Twitter use by Britain’s unions”.

The paper examined how new forms of digital engagement contribute to aspects of trade union renewal. The research suggests that unions in Britain are using communication channels like Twitter to form large networks that can support their social and political campaigning activities. There is a lot more to learn about how these tools can facilitate union messages to reach new and potentially unexplored audiences.

The study of labour organisations and unionism has been an important area of research within the School of Business and Management. Two articles authored by SBM academics were included in the September 2015 issue of the British Journal of Industrial Relations.
