Our campuses

Studying in the capital means learning at the forefront of modern medicine. Barts students get to experience all the challenges that come with providing healthcare in a busy and diverse city. You'll work side-by-side with pioneers in public healthcare, helping to change the lives of people across the world.

There's a strong sense of community among our medical and dental students Barts and The London Students' Association (BLSA) has its own student representatives, societies, sports clubs and facilities.

You'll live and study at our campuses in Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square. You'll also study at Queen Mary's main campus in Mile End, just down the road from Whitechapel, and at our West Smithfield campus in the City, where St Bartholomews's Hospital is located, close to Charterhouse Square.

Starting from the first term, you’ll be seeing patients at our partner hospitals and GP surgeries in the City, East London and Essex so you’ll be exposed to a greater diversity of people and their health problems than at almost any other medical schools in the UK.

Our London campuses

Whitechapel: our home in the East End

Based in Whitechapel, next to The Royal London Hospital, one of the largest new hospitals in Europe and home to London’s Air Ambulance, is our medical school including lecture halls and seminar rooms, research laboratories, student administration and support, cafes and restaurants, Barts and The London Student Association (BLSA) facilities, and some of our accommodation.

Whitechapel and nearby Brick Lane and Spitalfields are famed for bustling markets, art, culture and food.

There’s a strong sense of community among our medical and dental students, who are also based here. BLSA has its own student representatives, societies and sports clubs, plus a bar, games room, dance studio and social spaces on site.

Charterhouse Square and West Smithfield: our home in the City

You may live at our historic Charterhouse Square campus, in the heart of the City of London, close to Barbican and Farringdon stations. This is home to many of our renowned medical research institutes, and also has accommodation for medical and dental students, a café, study and social spaces.

A short walk away, you’ll find our West Smithfield campus, which is next to St Bartholomew’s Hospital and houses our purpose-built Clinical and Communications Skills Centre where you practise clinical methods and practical skills using mannequins and models. To help you develop key communication skills we use specially trained actors to simulate patients and give valuable feedback.

Mile End: our campus in east London

Queen Mary’s main campus is in Mile End, next to the Regents Canal. Just down the road from Whitechapel, here you’ll find our other two faculties, and a range of facilities, including shops, cafes, bars, gym, students union, and social and study spaces.

You’ll spend some time studying at the Mile End campus during the first two years of your degree. Practical sessions on anatomy take place here with tutors leading demonstrations using anatomical specimens and models, clinical images, videos of surgical and endoscopic procedures and specialised computer imaging.

Barts students are members of both Queen Mary Students’ Union and Barts and The London Students’ Association so you can take advantage of everything going on across our campuses including sports clubs and societies.

Our new campus in Malta

New Malta Medical School building

For a very different experience, you might like to consider studying at our medical school in Malta. If you choose to study in Malta, you will be taught mainly at the Gozo campus for the first two years, where you will use the teaching and training facilities in our newly-built medical school. You will study the same curriculum as our students in London and gain the Barts undergraduate experience while living in the Mediterranean.
