Maltese Language Courses

QMUL Malta Campus offers three Maltese as a Foreign Language courses that are accredited by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). These are:

  • Award in Maltese as a Foreign Language, which was designed for students to obtain the four basic skills of the Maltese Language and to understand Maltese culture
  • An Award in Medical Maltese (Part 1), which helps students acquire the basic skills in medical Maltese to communicate with patients and interact with colleagues in medical settings
  • An Award in Medical Maltese (Part 2), which helps students acquire further skills in medical Maltese to communicate with patients and interact with colleagues in medical settings

Award in Maltese as a Foreign Language (5 ECTS, MQF 1)

Description

Award in Maltese as a Foreign Language is offered to individuals, whose mother tongue is not Maltese, who would like to ascertain a beginner to elementary level in the Maltese language. By the end of the course learners would be expected to:

  1. use and understand basic vocabulary related to everyday life;
  2. develop a basic ability to use the language for practical communication;
  3. develop the four basic language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) up to Level A1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference);
  4. understand the basics of Maltese grammar;
  5. get an insight of the Maltese culture.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners would be expected to:

  1. practise the use of basic vocabulary in everyday life;
  2. practise the use of basics of Maltese grammar to help him/her communicate;
  3. demonstrate basic understanding of the Maltese culture;
  4. establish basic social contact using simple everyday greetings and basic phrases;
  5. practise the four basic language skills up to Level A1 of the CEFR.

Award in Medical Maltese Part 1 (5 ECTS MQF 1)

Description

Award in Medical Maltese (Part 1) is offered to students or individuals who aim to work or are working/practising in the health profession, whose mother tongue is not Maltese and who would like to ascertain a beginner to elementary level in Medical Maltese. By the end of the course learners would be expected to:

  1. use and understand basic medical vocabulary;
  2. develop a basic ability to use the language for purposes of practical communication with patients and colleagues in a medical setting;
  3. understand Maltese patients’ general symptoms expressed in their native language;
  4. revise and consolidate the basics of Maltese grammar in relation to the medical scenarios;
  5. get a basic insight of the Maltese culture related to the medical sector.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners would be expected to:

  1. practise the use of basic medical vocabulary in the medical setting;
  2. practise the use of basics of Maltese grammar to help him/her communicate in a medical context;
  3. demonstrate basic understanding of the Maltese culture related to the medical sector;

Award in Medical Maltese Part 2 (5 ECTS MQF 2)

 Description

Award in Medical Maltese (Part 2) is offered to students or individuals who aim to work or are working/practicing in the health profession, whose mother tongue is not Maltese but have passed Award in Medical Maltese (Part 1), and would like to ascertain an elementary to pre-intermediate level in the Medical Maltese. By the end of the course learners would be expected to:

  1. possess good knowledge of the general medical vocabulary, anatomical terminology and scientific terminology;
  2. have a good understanding, are aware of, and interpret general colloquial expressions for medical terms;
  3. could use the language for medical purpose;
  4. have a good understanding of the patients’ general symptoms;
  5. have a good command of the basics of Maltese grammar and syntax;
  6. have a more detailed insight of the Maltese culture.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course learners would be expected to:

  1. practise the use of elementary to pre-intermediate medical vocabulary in the medical setting;
  2. practise the use of elementary to pre-intermediate Maltese grammar to help him/her communicate in a medical context;
  3. demonstrate good understanding of the Maltese culture related to the Medical sector;
  4. establish and maintain social contact;
  5. follow instructions in Maltese and complete successfully a range of well-defined tasks related to medical procedures and practices.
