Why Israel has so many Palestinian prisoners

Vox interviewed Dr Hedi Viterbo for a video looking at Israel’s military court system, why it’s been a focus of outcry from human rights organizations and why hostage negotiations have historically involved the exchange of Palestinian prisoners.

The video explains there are two different court systems in Israel, a civilian court and a military court, with the majority of Palestinian prisoners being tried in the latter. Dr Viterbo said about the military courts: "There are Israeli military prosecutors, and they operate under Israeli military law, which is very very different to the Israeli nonmilitary legal system. The scope of these different court systems is determined not even by the territory, and not by the nature of the charge but rather by who is being prosecuted."
