Chocolates and flowers are the universal gesture on Valentine’s Day. However, when a cross-border dispute in a couple arises, nothing speaks a more lovely language than international arbitration. Thus, on 14 and 15 February 2023, students and alumni from the University of Vienna, Queen Mary University of London and University Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne gathered in the City of Love to spread the love for arbitration.

The event took place at the University of London Institute in Paris and consisted of two intense days of arbitration talks prepared by current students and alumni of the above-mentioned universities. Each presentation lasted about 15 minutes and was followed by a short but intense interaction with the group which raised interesting points of views to each one of the topics presented.

The event was organised as a jointly collaborations of Professors Maxi Scherer (School of International Arbitration, Queen Mary University of London), Christian Koller (University of Vienna), Mathias Audit and Sylvain Bollee (University Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne). The joint seminar served as an opportunity to explore new approaches to often discussed topics in international arbitration, as well to seed completely new thoughts on recent topics. Going from international to specific jurisdictions, from investment to sports arbitration, from the arbitral agreement to the enforcement of awards, and from in-Earth to outer space disputes, the two-day-seminar gave floor to attendees from the three universities to expose some their research on international arbitration. Some of the speakers took the opportunity to present their LLM dissertation or PhD research topics and submit them to discussion.

The event also helped to connect students and alumni from different jurisdictions and legal families. Coffee and lunch breaks during the two days of activities helped that purpose. Moreover, as part of the traditional gesture of the 14 February, the Viennese shared some typical Austrian chocolates (“Mozartkugeln”) with everyone. Finally, the hosts organised a dinner at the end of the whole event which was a wonderful way to round-up this excellent initiative!
