Natural disasters were responsible for an economic loss of US$ 313 billion worldwide in 2022, according to the Weather, Climate and Catastrophe Insight report. In addition, climate catastrophes such as floods, hurricanes and forest fires have become increasingly frequent and severe in recent years. Given this reality, the Institute for Innovation in Insurance and Reinsurance of the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV IISR) in Brazil, through a partnership with Queen Mary University of London, will bring together international experts on 20 June, 10 am (GMT -3), in a webinar to begin a discussion on the role of insurance and reinsurance in managing the risks of natural disasters associated with climate change in Brazil.

The event will feature a lecture by Dr Franziska Arnold-Dwyer, Director of the Insurance, Shipping and Aviation Law Institute at Queen Mary University of London, who will present on using cat bonds to strengthen climate resilience in local and regional communities. Following this, experts in the field will share their experiences and insights on how and to what extent insurance can provide financial protection against climate risks exacerbated by climate change.

This meeting, which brings together academics, regulators and companies from the sector, aims to identify potential research topics on 'Climate Change and Insurance' to be studied through a collaboration between FGV IISR and Queen Mary University of London. The project will focus on impacting the insurance industry and reducing the damage caused in society by this type of catastrophe.

The webinar presentations will have live broadcasts and simultaneous translation for portuguese. During this meeting, the guests will also address the insurance industry’s role in facing the climate emergency, the challenges and opportunities in providing insurance coverage for natural disasters, how insurance can support risk management, adaptation and mitigation of climate change, among other topics.

The seminar will be attended by representatives from the Superintendence of Private Insurance in Brazil (Susep), the law offices Machado Meyer and Mattos Filho, the São Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP), and the Insurance Companies Marsh McLennan and Guy Carpenter.
