Leon Y. Xiao, Visiting Scholar at Queen Mary University of London, has been named as one of The Game Awards’ Future Class 2022. The Future Class honours inspiring individuals who represent the bright, bold and inclusive future of video games.

Leon has been recognised by The Game Awards as a leading researcher into the regulation of video game loot boxes. He is particularly championed for his more balanced position looking towards the industry’s future by recognising the need for a sustainable solution to loot boxes and other forms of monetisation to be developed.

Leon’s research has been relied upon by governments, and policymakers and regulators have sought his advice directly. Leon’s recent study identifying that the Belgian ‘ban’ on loot boxes has been ineffective has been widely covered, including by GamesIndustry.biz, Gamespot, Eurogamer, Kotaku, and Game Developer.
