First-class year for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society: Gold Trophy and Professional Development Award Winners for their excellent, numerous and diverse opportunities.

A gold trophy above the words 'GOLD TROPHY WINNER QUEEN MARY ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION SOCIETY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD'The Queen Mary Students’ Union (SU) has recently awarded the Queen Mary Alternative Dispute Resolution Society the highly sought Gold Trophy and Professional Development Award 2020/21. The awards reflect the outstanding and highly qualitative work the society delivered this year which resulted in a wide range of invaluable opportunities for the Queen Mary law and business students.

In February, the society welcomed Ms Claudia Salomon, President of the ICC, International Court of Arbitration, and Professor Malaguti, President of UNIDROIT, who discussed with a high number of attendees about their career path, expertise and experience. The society is proud to have provided for the first-time ever at Queen Mary such an opportunity to learn from Presidents of such renowned international institutions.

At the same time, ADR Society ensured that students benefitted from a mix of panel discussions and workshops (academic and practical) with reputable arbitrators and professionals from international law firms, including:

  • Arbitration and Brexit – New Challenges between the EU and UK, with Professor Giorgio Sacerdoti, Professor Stefano Azzali, Professor Stavros Brekoulakis, Professor Antonio Crivellaro
  • Shipping Law with Reed Smith (speakers: Partner Thor Maalouf, and Trainee Sofia Papaspyropolou)
  • Introduction to ADR with Dr Helmut Ortner from WilmerHale
  • Practice Negotiation Workshops in preparation for BCLP x Queen Mary Negotiations Competition 2021/22
  • Comparative analysis of the civil and common law systems with Dr Silja Schaffstein, arbitrator and counsel at Levy Kaufmann-Kohler (in collaboration with the Law Society)

  • Series of events (in collaboration with ELSA Athens):
    • Introduction to Investment Law and Trade Negotiations
    • International Investment Arbitration and Advocacy with Young ICCA

The ADR Society is proud to have partnered with international law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) for the BCLP x Queen Mary Annual Commercial Negotiations Competition (in collaboration with ELSA, and Law and Business Society), already the competition’s third edition.

The competition welcomed 120 students, included six qualification rounds, and 14 hours of negotiation workshops with BCLP, Lawson Conner (part of IQ-EQ) and The Negotiation Club, the participants being judged by solicitors, trainees, legal managers, arbitrators, academics, including BCLP M&A Partner Richard Werner, and world-renowned arbitrator Professor Loukas Mistelis.
