Professor Rafael Leal-Arcas, Jean Monnet Chair in EU International Economic Law at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), has been invited to speak at the international high-level conference on 'Multilateral reform of Investor-State dispute resolution: A dialogue between different approaches,' in Xi’an, China, on 15-16 September 2019. The title of his presentation is “The modernization of the Energy Charter Treaty: Approaches to environmental protection.”

The conference is hosted by the Silk Road Institute for International and Comparative Law (SRIICL) and the Collaborative Innovation Centre for Silk Road Economic Belt Legal and Policy Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong University, and organized as the 'Silk Road Academic Belt' International Symposium 2019 of Xi’an Jiaotong University, and a subconference of the annual Eurasia Economic Forum.

The reform of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system is entering a new phase, with different approaches proposed, discussed and practiced by different states at different fora. Efforts to provide a theoretical framework for such reforms have been made but are yet to be commonly accepted.

This conference aims to bring together leading scholars and practitioners in ISDS reform sharing their latest thoughts on and their best practices in ISDS reform.
