This seminar will discuss the extent to which the criteria of patentability within the TRIPS Agreement provide opportunities to promote local innovation. To this end it will consider patentability criteria, and use Indian patent law as an example of how a WTO Member has used inventive step and industrial applicability to promote policies specific to national economic and social priorities.
Professor Daniel Gervais is the Director of the Vanderbilt Intellectual Property Program. He is a specialist in international intellectual property law, having spent 10 years researching and addressing policy issues on behalf of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO), and the Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC).
