BLSA (Malta) Board
What is BLSA (Malta)
BLSA is the part of Queen Mary Students’ Union that represents students studying medicine, dentistry, and allied courses.
BLSA (Malta) represents QM students studying in Malta, and helps to provide them with support, activities and social events during their time at Malta Medical School (MMS).
BLSA (Malta) representatives voice student opinions and raise any issues or concerns with staff at MMS.
Who runs BLSA Malta?
BLSA (Malta) is run by elected student representatives. Any Malta Medical School (MMS) student can stand for election to the BLSA (Malta) Board, and all MMS students can vote in the BLSA (Malta) elections.

The BLSA (Malta) Board is led by the two Co-Presidents, who are supported by a number of other elected officers.

BLSA (Malta) Board Elections
Elections for the 2024-25 BLSA (Malta) Board positions are taking place between 29 April and 23rd May 2024.
Why you should consider standing for election to the BLSA (Malta) Board
As a member of the BLSA Board, you will be carrying out an important and responsible role by representing students and helping them to enjoy their time at MMS.
You will work together with other BLSA Board members and staff from MMS, ensuring students’ views and opinions are heard, and that there are a wide range of events and activities for students to enjoy.
The leadership, teamworking and problem-solving skills that you develop will help to build your confidence and enhance your CV.
How and when to nominate yourself
The first step is to nominate yourself to stand in the elections. Nominations are open now and close on 13 May.
You can nominate yourself by completing this online form. Make sure you are logged in and then click “stand” to start the process. You’ll need to write a brief (max 50 words) manifesto and upload a photo. The Students’ Union will then be in touch with further instructions once the nomination phase is closed.

Voting takes place online between 20 May and 23 May 2024.

Course Reps
What are Course Reps
Course Reps represent the interests of students within their cohort. This means that Course Reps act as a liaison between staff and students. Course Reps collect feedback from the students in their cohort, and feed this back to the relevant staff members.
There are at least 3 Course Rep positions for each year of your course.
What do Course Reps do?
- Seek out the opinions of all the students on their course (by holding meetings, using social media, or conducting surveys).
- Represent the views of students at Student Staff Liaison Committees (SSLC) which are roughly once per month during term time.
- Give feedback and information to students after SSLC meetings.
- Take the time to prepare for meetings and following up actions after meetings.
- Online training is provided for Course Reps, including an introductory ‘Effective Representation' session.

Why you should consider standing for election as a Course Rep
Representing the students in your year group, and working with MMS staff to help raise and resolve any issues or concerns related to your course is an important and respected role.
You will help to ensure an excellent learning experience and environment for students at MMS.
