10 January 2018

Time: 1:00 - 2:00pm
Venue: FB 4.04/4.08 Bancroft

Abstract:

The main purpose of this paper is to present a comparative study of the evolution of loan growth for the European banking sector before and during the recent financial crisis. This paper empirically investigates both internal and external determinants of loan growth in a large dataset of EU-28 banking sectors during the period 2000 to 2015. The examined period includes two different phases of the financial cycle: a pre-crisis period of booming financial markets that dates from the beginning of the sample period up to 2006 and the global financial crisis, from 2007 to 2015. We also provide a systematic comparative analysis of the determinants of bank lending in developed banking sectors (western European economies) versus newly accessed economies as well as southern banking sectors.
