Fuller is a Senior Lecturer of International Business and Comparative Management in the Department of Management at King’s College London. His research focuses on technology strategy and business environments in emerging economies, particularly China. He has previously taught at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the School of International Service at American University.Seminar titlePolitical Embeddedness and Corporate Governance in State-owned Enterprises: Varieties of SOE Corporate Governance in ChinaAbstractThis study investigates the impact of different types of state ownership on elements of corporate governance, with particular reference to state owned enterprises in China. The on-going economic reforms in China have created different institutional resources and constraints for officials at different levels of government in China. These resources and constraints in turn impact how government owners at different levels of government manage the corporate governance of their respective state-owned firms. Utilizing mixed methods, this study found that different levels of government ownership pursue different corporate governance practices in terms of board independence and managerial salaries. We contribute to corporate governance research by challenging conventional definition of state ownership and propose that state-owners’ corporate governance practise can only be understood within their specific institutional contexts.
