Dr. Suriyah Bi will discussing her report published in February 2020 entitled “Empowered Employment: Unlocking the Workplace for Muslim Women”.
BreakThrough! Women's Café proudly welcomes Dr. Suriyah Bi to our November session!
Suriyah will be in conversation with Sultana Azmi who recently graduated from the School of Business and Management and is currently working for the civil service. We hope that this conversation will bring to light some of the shared experiences of Muslim women in UK workplaces, highlighting misconceptions and challenges of being a Muslim woman at work, as well as, the possibilities for positive change and social transformation.
This conversation will be followed by an open discussion with café participants.
About the speakers
Suriyah holds a BA (Hons) in Human Sciences at Magdalen College from The University of Oxford, a Masters degree from SOAS in Migration and Diaspora Studies, and a PhD from UCL in Geography and Yale in Sociology and Anthropology and is currently a Parliamentary Researcher and Lecture at SOAS University of London.
Sultana Azmi holds a BSc (Hons) in Business and Accounting from Queen Mary University of London, and has recently graduated from Queen Mary University of London with a first-class Hons degree in Accounting and Management. Originally from Bangladesh, Sultana spent half of her childhood in Italy before moving to London. "I am passionate about equality and diversity and one of the reasons I chose to work at the National Audit Office is because of its honest approach to the issue rather than sugar-coating and feeding lies to people. In addition to working at the NAO, I am pursuing a professional accountancy qualification with the ICAEW. My dissertation topic was focused on the ethnic pay gap between women of colour and their white counterparts in the finance sector. Having the ability to help people around me gives me the greatest joy!"
