Abstract
The study merges district level administrative data on crimes against women in India with nationally representative data on the labour market. This allows us to examine whether changes in the labour market have an impact on such crimes. We find that increased employment increases the incidence of crimes against women, with an elasticity which is close to 0.3. We also examine the effect of changes in gender specific employment on crimes against women by using industry weighted measures of gender specific employment; using this strategy we find that higher male employment increases crimes against women while higher female employment reduces them.
