Access and participation plan
Queen Mary is committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds can access, succeed in and progress from higher education. Through our Access and Participation Plan, developed in line with the requirements of the Office for Students, the University identifies and addresses barriers faced by underrepresented groups through targeted outreach, financial support, student success initiatives and progression programmes. The Plan is underpinned by ongoing evaluation and investment to improve equality of opportunity throughout the student lifecycle, from access and participation to graduate outcomes.
Inclusive learning spaces: Calm Zone and Accessibility Suite
In 2024/25, Queen Mary transformed an underused Mile End Library space into a Calm Zone, designed particularly to support neurodivergent students while remaining open to all library users. The space includes enclosed study booths, sensory-friendly seating and a reading-for-pleasure collection and was developed collaboratively by Library Services and Disability Support.
A separate Accessibility Suite improved access to specialist study environments and assistive technology. The Education submission records improvements including a redesigned layout, repurposed equipment and furniture, integration with the Library booking system and greater visibility of specialist support.
