Becoming an AI Enabled University
Queen Mary’s AI strategy sets out our ambition to become an AI-enabled university by 2028, using AI responsibly to enhance education, research and operations and deliver our mission of opening the doors of opportunity through excellence.
Vision
Our vision is that by 2028 Queen Mary is an AI-enabled university, which harnesses the potential of AI to augment human capability, by deploying practices and systems in ways which support and enhance our education, research and operations delivery.
This is a proactive and deliberate response to the broader environment in which government and employers are increasingly emphasising using AI to drive productivity gains, with resultant changes in ways of working and employer expectations at all levels of the labour market. In this context, while much of the broader impact of AI is yet to be realised or understood, we can be confident that to thrive and be seen as a leading university, we must quickly grapple with promised outcomes, including to actively shape the debate and impact.
Strategic objectives
Queen Mary will lead the way as an AI-enabled university, using the power of AI to deliver our mission of opening the doors of opportunity through excellence.
- Education: Empower students and staff to work productively with AI and flourish in the future workplace.
- Research: Further improve the quality of our excellent research.
- Operations: Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations through AI and automation.
These three domains provide the focus for our AI activity, supported by a common set of institutional enablers that allow Queen Mary to realise the benefits of AI responsibly and effectively.
Success by 2028
Queen Mary will have:
- Staff and students are equipped to work confidently, critically and responsibly with AI, supported by appropriate tools, infrastructure, skills and support.
- AI is contributing to improvements in the quality and impact of our education and research and the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations.
- Queen Mary has clear and proportionate governance, policy and guidance that enable responsible AI adoption and innovation.
- A portfolio of high-impact AI initiatives is delivering measurable benefits, with evidence informing future investment and adoption.
- Queen Mary's profile and influence are strengthened through scholarship, innovation, partnerships and sector leadership in AI.
AI will continue to evolve rapidly. Our approach will therefore remain adaptive and evidence-led: experimenting where there is potential value, evaluating impact, scaling what works and changing or stopping activity where benefits are not realised.
In doing so, Queen Mary will not simply respond to developments in AI but actively shape their use in support of our education, research and operational mission and the ambitions of Strategy 2030.
Enabling success
Delivery of the strategy will be overseen by the AI Strategy Group (AISG), providing cross-institutional strategic leadership and coordination across education, research and operations. Delivery across the three domains will be supported by four cross-cutting themes:
- Governance: providing strategic oversight, accountability and assurance.
- Policy and Guidance: establishing clear institutional frameworks for safe and responsible AI adoption.
- Capability Building: developing AI skills, confidence and expertise across the university community.
- Portfolio Assurance and Evaluation: identifying, supporting and evaluating high-potential AI initiatives and measuring their impact.
