Professor Panos Deloukas
Professor Deloukas is Director of the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) and Professor of Cardiovascular Genomics at Queen Mary. He leads the Precision Cardiovascular Genomic Medicine theme at the NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre.
His research focuses on understanding the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease and related conditions, including coronary heart disease and heart attack. Through large-scale international genetic studies, his research group has helped identify 70 genetic regions associated with coronary heart disease and heart attack risk. This work contributes to a better understanding of how genetic variation influences disease risk and could help inform future approaches to prevention and treatment.
Professor Deloukas has also made significant contributions to international genomics research. He was involved in the Human Genome Project, coordinating the sequencing and analysis of chromosomes 10 and 20, and subsequently contributed to the International HapMap Project, which helped map genetic variation across human populations.
He has authored more than 400 scientific publications and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2018 in recognition of his contributions to genomic medicine.
The Research.com ranking recognises scientists for their research contributions and impact, using publication and citation data alongside other measures of academic achievement.
