Profile

Dr Marybel Soto Gomez is a plant evolutionary biologist and agricultural scientist interested in both wild and cultivated plants. Her multidisciplinary research interests include phylogenomics, evolution of genomic and morphological traits, ethnobotany, and agrobiodiversity as a potential source of food-system resilience. Her current projects focus on (i) exploring the influence of angiosperm genome size on extinction risk, (ii) developing a framework for area-based conservation of agrobiodiversity using Ethiopia as a case study, and (iii) using phylogenomics to identify crop wild relatives of the globally important Dioscorea yams.
