Air Quality in Urban Areas: Harnessing Data to Breathe Easy

The subject of air quality has provoked much debate in the media, amongst policymakers, and within the public as concerns rise over the quality of the air we breathe both in our buildings and in our cities.
Helping to answer questions surrounding the quality of our environments, Queen Mary University of London and the Alan Turing Institute presents Air Quality in Urban Areas: Harnessing Data to Breathe Easy. This one-day conference will explore the issue of air quality within buildings, communities, and cities, looking at potential solutions presented through harnessing data, unleashing the power of machine learning, and cultivating artificial intelligence.
Speakers from industry and academia will set the scene and discuss recent innovations stemming from research at Queen Mary and the Alan Turing Institute, before presenting applicable solutions to issues of air quality.
This conference is for forward-thinking construction, facilities and building managers, building design consultants, architects, policymakers, fellow academics, national or local authority officers, NGO & professional body staff, trade association members, accreditation and certification bodies, air quality consultants and equipment manufacturers.

Kavita Datta - Queen Mary University of London
Professor Kavita Datta is Deputy Vice-Principal for Research Impact at Queen Mary University of London, and a Professor of Development Geography. Professor Datta's research spans economic and financial geography, and migration studies, contributing to critical understandings of transnational migration, financialisation and migrants’ financial practices. Chris Muller - Purafil Inc., ASHRAE
Chris Muller is Technical Director for Purafil, Inc. (Doraville, Georgia USA) with responsibilities for technical support services and various research and development functions. Chris has written and spoken extensively on the subject of environmental air quality and the application and use of gas-phase air filtration, corrosion control and monitoring, electronic equipment reliability and RoHS. Gary Fuller - The Guardian, KCL
Having led the development of the London Air Quality Network to become the largest urban network in Europe, Dr Fuller has pursued network data analysis techniques to characterise trends and changes in urban air pollution. Much of Dr Fuller's research is focused on the source apportionment of PM10 concentrations, to separate trends in primary PM concentrations from sources in London, from outside the city, from Europe and beyond. Theo Damoulas - The Alan Turing Institute
Dr Theo Damoulas is an Associate Professor in Data Science at the University of Warwick and a Turing Fellow of The Alan Turing Institute. He is also affiliated with NYU as an Exchange Assistant Professor at the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP). He was previously a Research Assistant Professor at NYU. Find out more here.
