The Basis of Gastro-Intestinal Disease (ICMM933/941)

This module provides an introduction to the basic science of Gastroenterology. It covers the anatomy, embryology, histology, immunology, physiology (pharmacology and neuroscience), cell biology and genetics of gut function.
In addition, lectures focus on research methodologies allowing students to appraise the evidence base underpinning the taught content. Important study skills such as drafting an essay, critical appraisal and referencing, are also covered allowing the students to write an essay or other long documents, with referencing (using EndNote for example).
- Explain the basic principles and practicalities of research in patients, including designing and running of a clinical trial.
- Determine the evidence base for a clinical problem (e.g. a treatment).
- Find, review, assess and present clinical and scientific research papers.
