Dear Colleague,
Please see below information regarding the family friendly focus groups which are being hosted by EDI and HR. New dates have been added/revised to support increased sign-ups. All sessions will take place on MS Teams.
At Queen Mary we are committed to enhance our family friendly practices to better support parents and carers across the institution. This is an important part of our Gender Impact Plan as well as our wider mission to be the most inclusive university of our kind, anywhere.
We are hosting a series of focus groups to hear from staff across Queen Mary on their feedback and recommendations to inform policy developments and wider enhancements to support parents and carers.
These sessions are open to all staff who wish to contribute to this work. We are particularly interested in hearing from staff who have taken parental leave within the last 5 years, both at Queen Mary and elsewhere, as well as managers.
Focus groups have been scheduled by staff group to enable us to understand the specific challenges and contexts for different groups and to identify recommendations relevant across our diverse staff community.
If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please email hr-equality@qmul.ac.uk. Please state in your email which session you are signing up to. All sessions will take place on MS Teams. Please sign up to the session that best reflects your role at Queen Mary.
- Session One – Teaching and Research Staff
22 February, 14:00 – 15:00 - Session Two – Professional Services Staff
1 March, 11:00 – 12:00 - Session Three – Research only staff, Teaching & Scholarship, Teaching & Professional Practice
2 March, 11:00 – 12:00 - Session Four – Managers (across all staff groups)
2 March, 14:00 – 15:00
We also recognise the need to consider the specific challenges faced by postgraduate research students in relation to parental leave and caring responsibilities. We will therefore also be holding focus groups specifically for postgraduate research students and staff with the responsibility of supporting PGR students, for example PhD Supervisors.
- Postgraduate Research Students
3 February, 10:00 – 11:00
I would be most grateful if you could circulate this among your team and network.
Best wishes,
Carol Malcolm

Whether you are a current apprentice, interested in undertaking an apprenticeship, or deciding whether an apprentice could enhance your team - there will be an event for you!
This year’s National Apprenticeship Week’s theme is Skills for Life. We’re encouraged to reflect on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, while supporting businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills.
This week will see the launch of the Coaching Apprenticeship at Queen Mary and an event for technicians, plus Q&A sessions and an apprenticeship myth-busting event; for example, did you know that apprentices can earn qualifications up to postgraduate level? The week will close with Queen Mary’s first annual National Apprenticeship Week Celebration, to thank those involved in apprenticeships and celebrate all the hard work it takes to complete and support an apprenticeship.
For further information on events during the week, please visit the National Apprenticeship Week 2023 page or email apprenticeships@qmul.ac.uk.
Healthy male and female volunteers aged 18-45 are needed for a WHRI investigation into how men and women resolve inflammation. Receive up to £130 + travel expenses for taking part. Email k.s.rathod@qmul.ac.uk or a.j.sullivan@qmul.ac.uk if interested. See the poster below.
