Education

Development and career progression

Someone observing an x-ray image of an ankleWe are committed to providing outstanding education in orthopaedic surgery at all levels – undergraduate and medical students, surgical residents, Masters and PhD students, fellows, young clinician scientists, and early career researchers. Our teaching programme for the two resident rotations (Pott & RLH) takes place monthly.

We also offer a number of courses and the opportunity to develop technical and non-technical skills in our state of the art simulation centre.

In addition to delivering the clinical curriculum we offer the opportunity to gain further understanding of evidence-based orthopaedic surgery. Teaching addresses the principles of research design, methodology, critical appraisal and delivery of clinical research.

Education for Integrated Academic Trainees

We run a comprehensive teaching programme held weekly for all academic trainees within Bone and Joint Health and Specialist Foundation Doctors at QMUL. This programme is led by Brett Rocos and is delivered by the academic team. Trainees benefit from hybrid online and in-person teaching of  lectures, small group sessions and one-to-one mentoring sessions with supervisors.

If you would like to find out more about our PhD programme or teaching for integrated academic trainees, please email us.

Objectives of the programme

  • Formulate a research question that can be answered
  • Select and justify a suitable study design for answering a question
  • Find and objectively appraise published evidence
  • Explain why patients must be involved in research design
  • Complete the necessary steps for ethical approval of a study
  • Deliver research using the NIHR frameworks
  • Create a poster that competes for academic prizes
  • Define the vital elements of an academic report
  • Understand the route of a surgeon / medical scientist career

Opportunities in Higher Education

We recognise the need to train the clinician scientists and researchers of the future, within Queen Mary University of London we have outstanding higher education opportunities. Our online Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc is highly regarded and provides students with the grounding to progress their career in trauma and orthopaedics. The MSc has an option to attend a two week summer school providing students the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and simulated scenario training.

For those considering a clinical academic career we have the infrastructure to support NIHR pre doctoral clinical academic fellowships and PhDs regardless of profession. We host NIHR academic clinical fellows and clinical lecturers. Professor Xavier Griffin has an excellent track record of top-level funding and fellowships from the National Institute of Health Research.  In addition he mentors for the NIHR and Royal College of Surgeons of England Associate Principal Investigator and Associate Surgical Specialty Lead schemes. Both these opportunities provide career development and mentorship for aspiring surgeon scientists and clinical academics.
