HST4626- Latin for Historians I

Credits: 20

Module Convenor: Dr. David Harrap

This module is an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their linguistic and cultural experience. Over half the words in the English language have Latin roots, and learning Latin is an excellent basis for improving English grammar and vocabulary and for learning other languages (French, Spanish, Italian). For medieval and early modern historians, knowledge of Latin is invaluable for working with primary source material. Latin (particularly medieval Latin) is also frequently used in legal and government documents, as well as in the modern sciences.

Assessment: Translation Exercise 1 (10%); Translation Exercise 2 (20%); Translation Exercise 3 (20%); Take Home Exam (50%)
