Profile
I studied medicine at Imperial College London, followed by training in Haematology in North East London. During my Haematology training I undertook a PhD funded by the Medical Research Council (Clinical Research Training Fellowship) in adult-T cell leukaemia/Lymphoma at Imperial College London, using genomic and immunological techniques. My research was published in the Nature journal Blood Cancer and at the American Society of Haematology annual scientific meeting. I was also awarded the British Society of Haematology Crucible prize for my talk on the topic of ‘How do Haematologists most harm patients’ on the subject of how systemic racism harms patients with sickle cell disease.
In 2023 I took up a joint Consultant post between NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and Barts Health NHS Trust. My clinical work involves care of patients with sickle cell and thalassaemia. I also provide clinical advice on Red Cell Immunology nationally via NHSBT, and I co-authored the NHSBT report ‘Supply and Demand of Ro Blood 2023’. I also work closely with NHSBT to improve recruitment for the NHS England funded Red cell genotyping programme, with responsibility for four specialist haemoglobinopathy centres. I am part of the Genomics England Sickle Cell advisory Board and a member of the National Haemoglobinopathy Panel, which meets monthly to discuss complex clinical cases.
I have recently been awarded a European Society of Haematology Clinical Research Training in Haematology award to develop a project around plasma exchange in sickle cell disease.
Teaching
Regular teaching on NHS Blood and Transplant course ‘Intermediate Transfusion Medicine’ and FRCPath Revision course.
Supervision of Masters’ students at University of Greenwich and Imperial College London.
Resident doctor teaching North East London Haematology rotations.
Undergraduate medical teaching at Imperial College London.
Research
Research Interests:
Awarded European Society of Haematology funding to attend the Clinical Research Training in Haematology, a nine-month programme to guide and mentor early-career researchers, for my project on the subject of ‘Plasma exchange in the management of acute chest syndrome in sickle cell disease’.
I am a sub-PI at a local level on the Genomics England Improving Black Health Outcomes study, which aims to recruit people of Black heritage, both with and without sickle cell disease, to a national genomic bioresource.
I am also interested in the area of haemoglobinopathies with difficult transfusion requirements, such as those patients with rare antibodies.
